PRODUCE LOVERS: What does your May taste like?

Probably mouth-watering pies, grilled vegetables and tangy salads – in whichcase, you’re in luck, because we’ve just gotten a barrelful of radishes (pink beauty, red ball and French breakfast) and luminous local rhubarb. (We also have new bunched spinach baby bok choy, baby sweet hakurei turnips, and lots of wild foraged ramps, but those are green – and green and red don’t go together in May.)

All these rubies are from Lancaster County in Pennsylvania, and go with the season – so we advise you to bet on red immediately!

As connoisseurs walk by the French section of our store, each and every one gives a reverential nod to one bottle – the Clos de la Roilette Beaujolais. Sometimes they touch the label, sometimes they just let loose a passing comment like ‘that wine is awesome.’ So when we found out that we had a shot at the last 10 cases of the 2011 vintage available to retailers and not reserved for restaurants, we took it. If only to preserve our street cred with our wine reps.

From a producer and vintage that that made famed wine critic Jancis Robinson crow: “I’m in love . . . go, go and invest heavily in 2011 Beaujolais”, this is truly a beloved bottle. Juicy, yet elegant with brambly red and black fruits and an unbelievably silky mouthfeel with notes of smoke and spice. And, in a nice bit of kismet, the label happens to feature a picture of a racehorse that has been on the bottle since the ’60s, perfect if you’re celebrating Derby Day and want an alternative to juleps.

To order Clos de la Roilette Fleurie 2011 ($22.00, $18.70 a bottle with 15% case discount), call us at (718) 797-9463.pm! Tasting tonight from 6-8

All of Brian’s wines come in 1 liter bottles, meaning there’s an extra glass and a half in each bottle as compared to standard 750 ml bottles. And if you’re comparing by price, his wine comes down to about $13 for 750ml. Shipping in liter bottles is not only more efficient and environmentally sound, it is economical as well. We’ll drink to that!

To order Jolie Folle Rosé 2012 ($17.50, $14.87 a bottle with case discount), call us at (718) 797-9463 or shop all our wines online.

The Spring inspired flavors in the Ice Cream case are probably our favorite, though!

Jeni’s never rests, always re-inventing her luxurious frozen delights. We’re excited to introduce her Apricot Yogurt, Raspberry Yogurt, and a new sandwich, the Orchid Vanilla. Made with Ugandan vanilla bean ice cream and dollop of black currant jam, between two almond macaroons, these are flying faster than you can say “Mothers Day.” We’ll have someone from Jeni’s handing out tastes on May 1st!

Paul from Adirondack Creamery has announced a new version of their coffee flavor, High Peak Perk. With flecks of coffee bean, their pure, locally made ice cream will keep you buzzing with glee.

Lastly, we’re really excited to announce that any day now, we’ll have three new offerings from Phin & Phebes. Their re-worked version of Coconut Key Lime is packed with graham cracker chunks, and for those who like a little salt with their sweet, Peanutty Pretzel and Dark Chocolate Salty Caramel is sure to delight.

Thusly, it’s our pleasure to introduce (with the consultation of our dynamo produce department) the first fresh greens of spring: organic, locally foraged fiddlehead ferns from D’artagnan, wild ramps and mustard greens from Lancaster Organics. (Which are flying off the shelves as we speak.) Get used to it – but first, enjoy it!

Based in Chicago, Upton’s Naturals offers seitan, made from wheat gluten. The Traditional variety is perfect for mixing into nearly any recipe, with a great chewy texture and a flavor that takes well to any sauce, just like chicken. But Upton’s one-upped themselves, introducing a hickory smoke infused Bacon Seitan. It crisps up nicely pan-fried in oil, but when there’s only 1.5g of fat in each serving, it’s practically a guilt-free indulgence.

If it’s burgers you’re looking for, check out the freezer case. We chose two flavors from Hilary’s Eat Well, Worlds Best Burger, and a spicy Adzuki Bean. Both are made from high protein grains quinoa and millet, vegetables and spices, and contain no soy, gluten or dairy. With a quick pan sear, these crisp up in mere minutes, yet stay soft and satisfying inside. These come 2 to a pack in a nifty minimal package, perfect for a quick protein boost at any time of day.

Also: keep a lookout for our pancetta picante, with a chili and fennel complexion!
