Gobble-Up These Thanksgiving Pairings

There’s no time like the present to be menu planning for Thanksgiving! – And what better way to prepare for a celebration than with another celebration? Think of it like a cocktail party where the autumnal hors d’oeuvres will leave you inspired for your own holiday meal planning. Join us at Wine & Spirits for 3 free tastings in November where we’ll pair tastes of domestically made wines with samples of all the fixings and sides from our Thanksgiving Menu.

Choosing Sides

Our Annual All-American 6-Pack features American made wines in red, white, and rosé. You’re sure to find something for every wine-lover at your gathering. When picking wines, it’s also important to consider what you’ll be pairing them with.  Our tasting series is designed to give you the tools to find the perfect wines for your culinary supporting roles.

While the focal point of Thanksgiving may be the turkey, sides are an essential piece of the holiday puzzle. Whether you’re looking for a dish to bring to a dinner party or outsource some of your own cooking, we have a variety of dishes to choose from. Of course we’ll have plenty of omnivore friendly offerings, but the real star this year is our veggie friendly sides! Because when you’re feeding a large group, its hard to please everyone and we recommend leaving the meat to the turkey and the stuffing. Highlights from this year’s menu include: Maple Glazed Yams, Brussels Sprout Gratin, Mushroom-Leek & Walnut Stuffing, Cranberry Relish, and gravy made two ways! We’ll have both a traditional turkey gravy and a plant-based vegan gravy!

We want your holiday to be better than ever this year, and we want to celebrate it with you! Stop by any of these complementary events to get a taste for the holidays and set the tone for a season of good friends, family, and food.

Fridays: November 2nd, 9th, and 16th from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Grill’s Night Out!

Can’t decide what to grill this weekend? Take a tip from our butchers! It doesn’t take much to bring out the incredible flavor of our grass-fed meats.
Beef: Dry Aged Rib-eye, Top Sirloin or NY Strip
Pork: Top Sirloin, T-Bone Chop
Sausage: Any kind!!
Pro-Tip: Use fresh soaked bundles of herbs in place of a basting brush, the slight abrasions they create increase the surface area for browning and impart light flavors throughout the meat.

Don’t forget the wine! While you’re grilling, open up a bottle of Chad Pinot Noir ’13 ($20), a tasty Cali pinot packed with lush, tart red fruits with underpinnings of fresh, mulchy earth.

Sourced from the Santa Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County, the wine is medium-bodied, versatile, and intense in flavor, allowing it to hold its own with whatever you’re throwing on the grill.

Happy grillin’ Fort Greene!

Larmandier Bernier Longitude Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Premier Cru NV

We’re thrilled to announce we’ve got six cases of the this year’s New York Times Best Value Champagne coming into the store tomorrow just in time for holiday celebrating and gift-giving.  Larmandier Bernier’s Longitude Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Premier Cru NV ($55) is a drier style of champagne the Times article called “clear, pure and multi-faceted, with aromas of flowers and herbs.”  Made exclusively from chardonnay grapes, this style of champagne is the height of current fashion in the bubbly world.  Small production by an individual grower with attention to quality in the bottle instead of marketing, these small house champagnes are known as ‘farmer fizz’.

Jolie Folle Rosé 2012

Tonight from 6-8pm the wine store is thrilled to host Brian Smith, local Fort Greene resident, sommelier of note and importer/mastermind behind the Loca Linda (“Crazy Beautiful”) line of Argentinian wines.  For his rosé, he’s gone to the heart of rose territory and brings us a french version of crazy beautiful, “Jolie Folle” rosé.

All of Brian’s wines come in 1 liter bottles, meaning there’s an extra glass and a half in each bottle as compared to standard 750 ml bottles.  And if you’re comparing by price, his wine comes down to about $13 for 750ml.  Shipping in liter bottles is not only more efficient and environmentally sound, it is economical as well.  We’ll drink to that!

To order Jolie Folle Rosé 2012 ($17.50, $14.87 a bottle with case discount), call us at (718) 797-9463 or shop all our wines online.

Bixby & Co. Chocolate on Sunday from 11:30-2:30pm at Provisions

And The Nominees For Best Wines To Pair With Pipcorn Are…

Did you know German movie theaters serve sweet kettle corn instead of our salted, buttered variety?  With a kettle corn tasting at Provisions on Friday, we found some Austrian and German wines to pair. Join us Saturday night to sample:

Frank Etz Gruner Veltliner ’11 1L – This crisp, refreshing Gruner in a 1 Liter bottle is a fantastic value and a perennial staff favorite.  Light, with bright notes of citrus and stone fruits.

Schmitts Kinder Silvaner ’11 – Made in Bavaria, in South East Germany, this wine is full-bodied with nice minerality, subtle spice and balanced acidity.

Weingut Schmitges Dry Riesling ’11 – A Classic style Riesling made in the Mosel, this wine boasts ripe peach, the slightest hint of sweetness and a thirst-quenching acidity on the finish to keep you wanting more. Good thing it comes in a liter!

Umathum Sankt Laurent ’10 – Made from the lesser known grape Sankt Laurent, this wine is akin to a Pinot Noir but with a funkier, more savory twist. Lighter in body, this red is silky with notes of spice and dark cherries.
